Park Place - Cass Street Bridge
Legend of Park Place - Albion, Michigan

Albion’s wealth of public parks is captured in this pen and wash rendering of “Park Place” that includes Lloyd Park and much more.

The art was created in 1995 by a commission from John Geyer. His business, “Park Place Apartments” is located in this area, as is the Morning Star/ Recorder offices and Albion Volunteer Service Organization. The same basic businesses are still there in 2019.

There are several historic references in this scene, in addition to the connection to all of Albion’s parks in general. The bridge shown is the Cass Street bridge, which was first built in 1896. There was much controversy of the extravagant cost at the time of $9,000, even though there were sufficient funds to pay for it without bonds.

The person who was the driving force behind the project, Mayor Dr. Samuel S. Dickie, also president of Albion College, was ridiculed for the expense and the reinforcements he ordered to be done. People called the bridge “Dickie’s Folly.” It was an earth-filled arch bridge consisting of three arches, 144 feet in length and 29 feet in width.

About a decade later, in 1908, came the great flood. All bridges in Albion were wiped out, except the Cass Street Bridge. Dickie was vindicated and now appreciated. In 1994, one year before this art was created, the bridge was rebuilt and the original stones were set back in place so the bridge looked similar to how it was before.

There were concerts in past years at Lloyd Park, where bands would play on the platform on the river, and black squirrels still play at this park, and at all 17 Albion public parks. Nearby, across the river, is Bournelis Park, that is well known for its view of the Coca-Cola mural and blue Albion water tower, both showing just above the bridge.

Albion’s seventeen parks might be a world’s record for the most public parks per capita of any city in the world.
