The Legend of the Stockwell Memorial Library, Albion College

Albion College’s Stockwell Memorial Library was completed in 1938, and housed not only the library but also the art department. The building was designed by well-known Albion architect Frank Dean and was made of bricks and stone in a Neo-Greek architectural style. The third floor once housed the Albion College archives, and also a collection of furniture from the namesake and benefactor of the building, Madeline Stockwell Turner.

Madeline Stockwell’s father, Charles Franklin Stockwell, was the first Principal of the Wesleyan Seminary, that later became Albion College. Madeline’s grandparents were the Peabodys, who were the first white settlers to arrive at the area of the Forks of the Kalamazoo River. Madeline attended Albion College, receiving a two-year degree, and later was the first woman to attend University of Michigan.

The bridge walkway to the left of this scene leads to the Seeley G. Mudd Learning Center where the archives and furniture are now on the third floor of that connected building.
