The legend of the Petoskey Stone is as follows:

The Petoskey stone was named the state stone of Michigan in 1965.

The city of Petoskey, Michigan gets its name from an old Ottawa Indian Chief, Ignatius Petosega.  "Pet-o-sega" means "rays of the rising sun".  Petoskey Stones are named in reference to the dark-colored "eye" & radiating lines of individual Hexagonaria corallites.  These fossils were deposited by glaciers in Mich.
