Legend of Washington Gardner School
- Albion, Michigan

Washington Gardner School - From 1872-2011, a school has sat on E. Michigan Avenue as a landmark where thousands of pupils have been educated and graduated. This school was cobbled together in various stages, the oldest part still standing in this art dates back to 1885.

Washington Gardner High School was in existence as a high school for nearly 40 years, from 1928 to the end of 1966. In 2009, Washington Gardner Middle School at this location was closed. The facility is landlocked and outmoded for today’s educational and financial needs. This classic building was purchased by Albion College in 2011.

The Honorable Washington Gardner (1845-1928) was a Civil War veteran. He came to Albion in the 1880s, serving as a professor at Albion College and as a pastor at the local Methodist Episcopal. Gardner served as Michigan’s Secretary of State from 1894 to 1899. He was elected to the United States House of Representatives. Gardner was Commander-In-Chief the National Grand Army of the Republic, (G.A.R.)an organization made up of Union Civil War veterans.

In 1914 a National Encampment of the G.A.R. was held in Detroit. An issue of the Detroit News featured a huge front-page photograph of Washington Gardner, with white hair and riding a fine white horse, leading the parade.
